The origin of the project

The Feasibility Study for the Hengchun (Southern Pingtung) Tourist Railway was initiated to extend the railway service coverage, introduce green, energy-efficient transportation, and alleviate highway transportation pressure on the Hengchun Peninsula.

Plan outline

  • Route: The planned route runs from Neishi Station (Pingtung) to Hengchun, spanning approximately 39.62 kilometers. It will be constructed as a single-track electrified line, passing through Fangshan, Fenggang, Haikou, Checheng, the National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium (NMMBA), and terminating in Hengchun. The aims of the service are to cater the tourists to Hengchun area, developing tourism resources and driving development along the route. Six stations will be established along the route.
  • Funding: This project has been allocated NT$0.85 billion under the Forward-looking Infrastructure Program for undertaking Comprehensive Planning, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), and related preliminary works.

Expected benefit

  • Public Transit: To strengthen the public transportation backbone and alleviate traffic congestion on the Hengchun Peninsula.
  • Tourism Development: To develop a railway tourism model and enrich the tourism elements of the Hengchun Peninsula.
  • Regional Activation: To connect and revitalize local attractions, driving the overall development of the Hengchun Peninsula.
  • Environmental Protection: To introduce green, energy-efficient vehicles, thereby preserving the ecological environment of the Hengchun Peninsula.
