South-Link Line Railway Alignment Improvement and Bottleneck Section Double-Tracking Project
- The feasibility study was approved by the Executive Yuan on December 26, 2025.
- Our bureau/agency is currently handling the comprehensive planning.
The origin of the project
To enhance operational speed and driving safety within the project area, and to strengthen infrastructure design standards, this initiative will also serves to improve passenger evacuation capacity toward the south in the event of disruptions on the Eastern Main Line.As a backup route for the North-Link Line, it plays a critical role in strenghtening the resilience of Taiwan’s circular railway network. Therefore, this implementaton of this project is essential.
Plan outline
The geographic scope of this project covers the Taiwan Railways Pingtung Line from Liukuaicuo Station to the South-Link Line’s Taitung Station, with a total length of approximately 140.7 km. Of this, around 40 km will undergo improvement works, summarized as follows:
- Alignment Improvements: 1 section of curve straightening,4 curve modification sections
- Double-Tracking of Bottleneck Sections: 4 sections
- Single-Track Optimization: 3 passing sidings
Expected benefits
- Improve Travel Efficiency:Enhance suboptimal alignments and bottleneck sections to shorten travel time.
- Ensure Transportation Safety: Significantly improve railway operations and regional traffic safety.
- Meet Capacity Demand:Evaluate traffic growth and capacity requirements following electrification of the Pingtung Line (Chaozhou–Fangliao section) and South-Link Line (Fangliao–Taitung section).
- Achieve Target Travel Time:Achieve the goal of a 90-minute fast commute between Kaohsiung and Taitung.
